Barnstable is the largest town on the Cape and named after Barnstaple in England. The area was first explored in 1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold and was the second on Cape Cod to be settled in 1638. The town has seven villages within its border and the largest of these is Hyannis. The others are Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Marston Mills, Osterville and West Barnstable. Seperated by Rt. 6 Barnstable to the North offers a taste of old Cape Cod with the harbor, beaches and old historic Rt. 6A running through it. South of Rt 6 you will find a mix of the old with modern amenities and commercial interests such as an airport, large hotels, and shopping malls.
