Bourne was first settled in 1640 and it was a part of the town of Sandwich up until it was incorporated in 1884. The town is the site of the first and oldest store in America the Aptuczet trading post was started by the pilgrims in 1627 which was at a spot halfway betwen the 2 rivers which would later be made to form the Cape Cod Canal. Though Bourne was the last town to join the county Barnstable it is often rfeferred to as the first town since it is the first town travellers enter as they make their way over the Sagamore bridge, the Bourne bridge or the Railroad bridge. Bourne is also home to the Massachussetts Maritime Academy where tomorrows seamen are trained. Also a portion of the Otis Air national Guard Base is in town.
